About Screw Piling

Screwpiles are wound into the ground much like a screw into wood. Screwpiles are installed using various earthmoving equipment fitted with rotary hydraulic attachments. Machinery varies from skid-steer loaders to 5 tonne through 80 tonne excavators. Rotary hydraulic powerheads with torque capacities ranging from 5,000Nm to 500,000Nm are custom fitted using various boom configurations. Special drive attachments connect the screwpile to the machine. Correct installation techniques are paramount to meet engineered design load and settlement outcomes. Incorrect techniques are likely to result in poor overall pile performance.

Screwpiles can be referred to as screw piles, steel screw-in foundations, screw piers, helical piles, helical anchors, screw anchors, screw foundations and helical piers.

Application Areas

Residential & Luxury Residential

Instant Screw Piles are used widely to support residential construction projects by using great economies of scale and speed of installation. Screw piles are widely recognised as the fastest installation of all piling methods. Piles can literally be installed and have concrete footings poured over the piles in the same day. For luxury residential projects any small amount of deflection in the footing system can be evident in the performance of the structure. While this is undesirable in the luxury housing market, Instant Screw Piles can be used to greatly reduce or eliminate any potential settlement which may result in stress upon the structures. Water front developments are becoming increasingly popular in the residential housing market. Screw piles can be used effectively to support the load of the structure at sufficiently deeper levels to eliminate any settlement adjacent to the waterway.

Lightweight

In temporary situations such as piling used for particular sporting or cultural events the benefit of a screw piles is that they can be removed easily at the end of the event. Screw piles can be wound out by simply rotating the pile in the reverse direction to when it was installed. This enables the project manager to leave the site in the exactly the same condition he found it and without any subsurface debris being left behind. Cirque Du Soleil's Grand Chapteau has utilized screw piles for temporary installations in Australia and Singapore. The screw pile can be removed easily and the public grounds returned to their natural state at the end of the Cirque Du Soleil's Program.

Environment

Instant Screw Piles are the pure environmental choice for deep foundations. Screw Pile rigs can reach out up to 20m, thereby not damaging vegetation adjacent to waterways. There is no environmental pollution from noise vibration, no soil spoil and no concrete wastage. Screw piles can be installed with minimal impact to the environment and damage to vegetation from the establishment of the screw piling installation rig. Because screw piles are generally purpose built for the application wastage is virtually eliminated.

Screw piles can be used effectively in footbridges, road bridges and a range of other environmental projects where the installation rates are very fast and exceed those rates of traditional piling methods.
